Massimo Gualtieri

His start

  Massimo Gualtieri, born in Rome, started his musical studies with the piano, subsequently dedicating himself to orchestra direction, musical composition and lyric song, achieving diplomas of Piano, Choral Music and Direction of Chorus and Orchestra.

  As conductor, he improved himself at the school of Nicola Hansalick Samale in L’Aquila and Donato Renzetti in Pescara and for Direction of Chorus under Davide Gualtieri, Jurgen Jurgens in Urbino, Milan and Hamburg.

  Moreover, he attended several specialization courses, given – between the others – from Francesco Luisi and Nino Albarosa for Musicology and Gregorian song, Alessandro Specchi and Elio Battaglia for Liederistic Music.

  Under Riccardo Zama (Beniamino Gigli’s piano collaborator) he studied the Italian opera repertoire and its executive translations.

  He also attended master classes of opera interpretation under Maurizio Arena.

Massimo Gualtieri

First orders

  He started his activity as conductor in 1985 with local ensemble and orchestras; subsequently gave life to the Chamber Orchestra “Gli Archi di Roma”, with which he participated, between the others, to the Todi Festival.

  From 1986 to 1993 he was permanent director of the symphonic and choral concerts of the Festival Valentiniano dedicated to the great saint Valentino, patron saint of the city of Terni and of the sweethearts all over the world.

  In 1992 he conducted several performances of Rossini’s “Stabat Mater” in the celebrations for the bicentennial of the birth of the Saint in several Umbria’s theatres, in Assisi, Todi and Perugia.

  For the Festival Valentiniano he also conducted concerts with the winners of the international musical contest for Flute and Clarinet dedicated to Giulio Briccialdi, the famous Flute virtuous called in the XIX Century “the Paganini of the Flute”.

Successive years

  He founded and directed the Chamber Orchestra "I Solisti Umbri".

  He conducted repertoires from Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Cilea, Bellini, Donizetti, arias, symphonies and opera choirs; sacred music repertoires: Pergolesi/Stabat Mater, Vivaldi/Gloria, Credo, Mozart/Requiem, Masses and La Betulia Liberata, Beethoven/C Major Mass, Schubert/Masses, Rossini/Stabat Mater, Verdi/Requiem, Perosi/La Risurrezione di Lazzaro, Orff/Carmina Burana.

  He has directed concerts with Pavel Vernikov, Gianluca Terranova and, since 1997, with famous soprano Katia Ricciarelli.

  He participated in the 2000 Great Jubilee conducting in Vatican several choruses in the presence of Cardinal Camillo Ruini and Pope John Paul II.

International Experiences

  In the course of his prestigious career he collaborates regularly with Italian and foreign Orchestras conducting several concerts with lyric-symphonic and symphonic-choral repertoires and sacred music: Symphony Orchestra of Marche (Italy), Marchigiana Symphony Orchestra, Timisoara’s National Philharmonic Orchestra, Craiova’s Philharmonic Orchestra “Oltenia”, Ihjevsk’s Russian Symphony Orchestra, National Moldavian Philharmonic Orchestra, Bacau’s Symphony Orchestra, Plovdiv’s Symphony Orchestra, Tirana’s Academy Chamber Orchestra, Plovdiv’s State Academy Orchestra.

  He also conducted a repertoire of Italian opera music with soloists, Chorus and Orchestra at the Craiova’s (Rumania) Opera Theatre during the Gala Concert in conclusion of the 2004’s Opera season.

Eclectic musician

  He strictly collaborated with Roberto Benigni and Nicola Piovani in carrying out the music and the musical scenes for the three films “Life is Beautiful” (Academy Award Winner), “Pinocchio”, “The Tiger and the Snow”.

  He’s also musical consultant for the Papigno (Italy) Cinema Studios collaborating in several productions like “Tosca and the Women” (2002, directed by Giorgio Ferrara), “The Hungarian Servant” (2003, by Massimo Piesco and Giorgio Molteni), “La Terra del Ritorno” (2003, by Jerry Ciccoritti), “The Fine Art of Love: Mine Ha-Ha” (2005, by John Irvin).

  Deeply interested in the study of musicology and the interpretative praxis of the Seventeenth’s Century’s Italian vocal music, he collaborated with musicians and ensembles particularly specialized in this field.

  He’s also made a careful study of the Sixteenth Century’s polyphonic music, conducting repertoires from Palestrina, Marenzio, Frescobaldi and several other important authors.

  With the “Monteverdi Ensemble”, founded and conducted by he, utilizing the original texts and instruments, he participated in several festivals and concert seasons.

  Also active as a teacher, he has a twenty-year experience at Academies of music, courses of specialization and choruses.

Constant commitment

  Enthusiast and dreamer almost until utopia and always persuaded that music must be “everybody’s heritage”, deeply fond of choral music since the beginning of his studies, he started in his city from the beginning of ‘80’s a great and involving social and cultural movement of “music-appreciation” with adults devoid of a previous musical knowledge.

  He founded two choruses (Musica Antiqua Chorus and Coro della Pace, with over 100 elements) and collaborated with several others; with these ones and with his students he carried out many oratorial and theatrical works.

  He conducted concerts with two and more choruses together, with big staffs, in various events organized by A.R.C.U.M. (Regional Umbria Choruses Association) of which he’s also been Vice-President and member of its Artistic Committee.

  He conducted the Chorus and Juvenile Orchestra of Briccialdi Institute, where at present he teaches Choral and Orchestral Practical Works. The results of his technical and artistic work have also achieved several collaborations with Authorities and Concert Associations for represent choral and orchestral productions - also with big staffs - Oratorios, Repertorios and opera productions: Rossini/Stabat Mater; Mozart/Requiem; Verdi/Requiem; Beethoven/C Major Mass; Perosi/Resurrezione di Lazzaro; Puccini/Bohème, Tosca; Mascagni/Cavalleria Rusticana etc., with the Sagra Musicale Umbra, the Briccialdi Academy, A.Gi.Mus., Teatro Lirico Sperimentale of Spoleto and other musical associations in Italy.

  He also attended the correction of the score of Alessandro Casagrande’s Mass in D minor for Chorus and Orchestra (Alessandro Casagrande is the great musician born in Terni (Italy) to whom is dedicated the famous Piano international contest) and conducted the performance of the Mass in occasion of the eightieth anniversary of Casagrande’s birth.

Nowadays

  In the year 2006, with the same energy and determination, he has re-established the Theatre Verdi Orchestra (Terni - Italy), with which he has performed and conducted lyric - symphonic concerts, for instance: "Carmen" by Bizet (2006) for Terni's Lyric Amphitheatre, "La Bohème" by Puccini (2007) in the Theatre Traiano (Civitavecchia – Roma) with tenor Gian Luca Terranova.
